How to tell if someone is a false prophet

false prophets, heretics, blasphemous, false teachers, Justin Peters, heretical, false apostles

False ‘prophets’ and modern-day ‘apostles’

Part 1
Are there modern-day Apostles during this time?

13For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”
2 Corinthians 11:13-15
(ESV)

The question (that only God can answer!) is, are these people actually Christians to begin with? (see video below):

What made someone an apostle in biblical times?

According to what the Bible says, in order to be an apostle, one had to meet at least three necessary qualifications as follows:

  1. An apostle had to be directly appointed (or commissioned) by Jesus Christ Himself (Mark 3:14; Luke 6:13; Acts 1:2, 24; 10:41; Gal. 1:1);
  2. An apostle had to be an eyewitness of the resurrected Christ (Acts 1:22; 10:39–41; 1 Cor. 9:1; 15:7–8);
  3. An apostle had to be able to confirm his mission and message with miraculous signs (Matt. 10:1–2; Acts 1:5–8; 2:43; 4:33; 5:12; 8:14; 2 Cor. 12:12; Heb. 2:3–4).

We might also note that, in choosing Matthias as a replacement for Judas, the eleven also looked for someone who had accompanied Jesus throughout His entire earthly ministry (Acts 1:21–22; 10:39–41). Therefore, with this criterion in mind, It seems that no apostles were appointed after Paul, and certainly, since no one today can meet the qualification of having seen the risen Christ with his own eyes, means that there are no apostles today.

The office of apostle and prophet and evangelists

In the New Testament, the concept of ‘office’ speaks to functions and tasks, rather than to status and position.

(The five-fold ministry gifts of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor, and Teacher, is found in 1 Kings 18:44; and, Ephesians 4:11)

Our office is simply our role in the body of Christ as the Church and in relationship to the gifts God has given us. “Office” is often inappropriately used in a hierarchy of leadership power, often saying that Prophets and Apostles have more favor in God’s eyes than the rest of us which is not true.

‘Apostle’ is a title only and not a position that you sign-up for or train in as NAR advocates falsely believe. Often these people claim such titles as they are all about getting more authority, privileges, power, and recognition than the rest of the body. Also, like the gift of decrement, one is given that spiritual gift from God, as it is not something that you can be trained in according to what those false teachers say.

In these last days, God has spoken to us by His Son

All we need to know for salvation and sanctification has been given to us through the teaching of the biblical apostles and prophets, and this teaching is found in the Scriptures. Now that God has spoken in the last days through His Son (Hebrews 1:2), we don’t need further words from him to explain what Jesus Christ has accomplished in his ministry, death, and resurrection. Instead, we are “to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all” through the apostles and prophets (Jude 3). And again, all of this means the office of apostle was restricted to the 13 men in the first century, and that job description has already been filled. To put it another way, we don’t have apostles like Paul and Peter and John anymore—and those who self-identify as apostles today are deceivers.

In conclusion of part 1

But you are to proclaim things consistent with sound teaching.
Titus 2:1 (CSB)

Hebrews 1:2 says: “ 1Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.”

  • The Canon of Scripture has been closed for prophecies specifically about future events.

1 Corinthians 14:3 says: “ 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.“

  • The spiritual gift of prophecy is very active in Christian’s lives today.

Pray that these false teachers, ‘apostles’ and ‘prophets’ repent of their false teachings, and turn to the true gospel of the Risen Lord, Jesus Christ. I pray that this post may have blessed and encouraged you in your walk and relationship with the Lord.

I can do all things through a verse out of context.”

Part 2
Four things to be aware of about deceivers and false ‘prophets’

The Word of Faith moment is a different gospel—they have a different God, a different Jesus, [and] a different gospel.”
– Justin Peters

New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) advocates believe that there are prophets today who possess similar authority as that of the Old Testament prophets. This extraordinary authority extends to individuals (often referred to as “Generals”), nations, and churches. The following is how we, as true believers can test someone to see whether or not they are a true or false prophet.

1) How to test deceivers and false prophets

 2 ‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false.’
Revelation 2:2 English Standard Version (ESV)

Who are they? Most of the people practicing false prophecy (and deception) have an over-elevated view of the Holy Spirit and feelings (or ‘manifestations’) over Scripture. They often have a faulty view of ‘signs and wonders’ not realizing the difference between actual signs and wonders versus just basic, natural human reactions. What they are doing as far as manifestations go can be done apart from the Holy Spirit. There is often a sense of anti-intellectualism whereby they rely more on feelings and experiences to validate their misguided behavior and practices. Most of the preaching from these false teachers is just another motivational speech, with ‘God’ pasted onto the surface to make it sound as if it’s Christian. However, in accordance with Scripture, we are instructed to actually test those who claim they are receiving direct revelation from God. How do we do that? Answer: through Scripture. Deuteronomy 18:12-19 serves as a preamble as a test that’s subscribed in verse 20. Here Moses writes:

 15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— 16 just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire anymore, lest I die.’ 17 And the Lord said to me, ‘They are right in what they have spoken. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.”

Jesus of course is the fulfillment of this prophecy by Moses. Peter confirmed this in Acts 3:22 and, In Revelation 19: 10 John says:

 10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Above, the spirit of prophecy is equated with testifying about Jesus. True prophets are not going to point you to themselves; they are going to point you to Christ, and they’re going to direct you to what God has said, and what has been revealed in the pages of Holy Scripture. They are not going to center in on their incredible supposed supernatural experiences—they’re going to point you to the Savior, as He’s revealed within the pages of the Bible. As Moses predicted in Deuteronomy 18, and just as Peter described as being fulfilled in Acts 3: “God is going to raise up a prophet for us and we are to listen to Him,” and of course, the prophet is Jesus Christ. With that important background in mind, let’s take a look at the ‘test’ for prophets that are described in Deuteronomy 19:20 which we will see next.

The test

 20But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the Lord has not spoken?’— 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.”
(Deuteronomy 18:20-22)

So, if we use the biblical standard for a true prophet, then when it comes to their predictions, there must be 100% accuracy. If they fail in even one prediction, then they are not true prophets of God.

30 An appalling and horrible thing
Has happened in the land:
31The prophets prophesy falsely,
And the priests rule on their own authority;
And My people love it so!
But what will you do at the end of it?”

2) Characteristics of deceivers and false prophets

  • They are eschatologically confused;
  • They will show false signs and wonders that are so amazing that even the elect could be fooled;
    Mark 13:22
    “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect.”
  • These people will be smooth-talking, and flattering, telling you how amazing you are—but the purpose is to deceive;
    Romans 16:17-19
    “I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naïve.”
  • These people peddle the Word of God for a profit;
    2 Corinthians 2:17
    “For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God’s word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.”
  • They are false apostles disguising themselves as servants of righteousness (just like Satan);
    2 Corinthians 11:13-15
     13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”
    So we must always get to the root of what they are saying and teaching and make sure that it’s the correct gospel and the correct Jesus! God can heal anybody He wants in a true church or a false one; but also the devil can do false signs and wonders just like are done by witchdoctors.
  • They suffer from what is called ‘symbolicalism’ which is a desire to interpret Scripture symbolically;
  • They have a disturbing inability to believe that God knows how to communicate;
  • They have a compulsive desire to strip Bible verses away from their context;
  • They have sudden spasms of detective work, searching for hidden meanings;
  • They maniacally mythologize the Genesis creation and Revelation End-times accounts;
  • They end up having delusions of grandeur, playing God by deciding what the Bible truly does or does not mean;
  • They create a very confusing tapestry of Bible prophecy that pulls people away from the literal understanding of the Bible the way God means us to understand it. Examples are LDS who believe in a spiritual return of Christ in 1844; a replacement of Israel and the Church theology; extra-biblical prophets such as Ellen G. White; and so on.

Sid Roth, honestly has the descernment of a lug nut.”
– Justin Peters | (one of my absolute favorite quotes from brother Justin)

This statement above is in reference to a video Sid Roth’s show, ‘it’s supernatural’ called the “Top 10 Urgent Prophecies About President Trump,” of which all of the 10 most famous ‘prophets’ missed (not to mention everything about COVID-19, and the riots), and the fact that Donald J. Trump did not get elected when all of them said that he absolutely would!

3) Scripture about deceivers and false prophets
Rather than Coffee Scribe concluding whether or not there are modern-day prophets and apostles—we will simply let the Scriptures speak for themselves.

1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Matthew 24:4-5
4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray.”

Ezekiel 13:9
My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.

Jeremiah 23:16
This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.”

Luke 6:26
Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.

Matthew 16:11-12
11 “How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

2 Timothy 4:3-4
3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Matthew 7:15-20
15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.”

Additional Scripture

God is serious about the presumption of anyone who speaks falsely in His name. We are not under the law that we would put someone to death, but God will judge that person, what a terrible thing to happen, we should all speak with care as to not blaspheme and take the Lord’s name in vain. Here are a bunch of scriptures about discerning false prophets, we don’t need to guess, God tells us about them plainly: Jeremiah 23:21, Isaiah 8:20, Deuteronomy 18:20-22, Micah 3:11, Ezekiel 22:25, Ezekiel 22:28, Isaiah 30:10, Jeremiah 5:31, Jeremiah 14:14-16, Deuteronomy 13:1-5, Matthew 7:15-23, Matthew 24:11-12, 2 Peter 2:1-3, 1 John 4:1, 2 Timothy 4:2-4, 1 Corinthians 14:32, 1 Corinthians 14:37, Matthew 24:24, Mark 13:22, Revelation 13:11-14, Revelation 16:13-14, Revelation 19:20.

4) Actual names of counterfeiters, deceivers, tricksters; and false ‘apostles,’ ‘prophets,’ and teachers

ATTENTION: Often, false prophets’ stories are non-verifiable (as there is no way of proving them or testing them), are known only by themselves, and cannot be confirmed by Scripture—because they’re nowhere to be found in the Bible. Deceivers fool people into accepting their stories as true by their so-called experiences (such as their ‘indisputable’ and unbelievable trips to heaven, in-person visits with ‘Jesus,’ instructions (or gnostic ‘insights’) from heaven, etc.). Dreams and visions are biblical—but not when they contradict the Bible. People who follow these false ‘prophets’ view other Christians as being ignorant of the Holy Spirit’s supernatural nature and power or being religious. These liars are always promising the next ‘big revival’ as just being “around the next corner” but in reality never happens. They keep the naïve coming back for more ‘special revelation’ which in truth—God has not spoken. These (below) are the ones who decree and declare the “releasing, commissioning, and dispatching of angels”—in an attempt to bring about “Kindom rule” now. They do all of this in the “Name of Jesus,” but the question should be which ‘Jesus’ and ‘gospel’ version are they invoking? (Ephesians 4:14).

False teachers (and false ‘Apostles’ and ‘Prophets’) like Ana Werner, Andrew Womack, Andy Stanley, Benny Hinn, Beth Moore, Dr. Bill Hamon, Bill Johnson, Bob Larson, Bobby Conner, Brian Houston, Brian Simmons, C. We should pray for those who are caught up in the falsehood of these false prophets and the NAR. We should petition the LORD and ask that the Spirit will work in their hearts, so that they may embrace the true Jesus as He is freely offered in the gospel.

false teachers, false prophets, coffee scribe

There are a few names that have surprised some of our readers (that aren’t so blatantly false at first glance), of which we felt to link more information about them for further clarification here, such as Beth Moore, Francis Chan, Jonathan Cahn, Pat Robertson, and Perry Stone. A lot of these people may have started out well, but over time have either revealed their true colors of what they really are as false prophets, or have become deceived themselves somewhere along the way. Also, please note there are many preachers and teachers that are not preaching outright heresy, but maybe are ‘off’ in an area of doctrine compared to other preachers (as we can’t and shouldn’t expect everyone to have ‘perfect’ doctrine all of the time)—but that doesn’t necessarily make them what we would commonly call a false teacher—as perhaps some are still growing in their understanding of Scripture as all of us are. For example, theologian, and pastor, John Piper may have preached about something questionable, or perhaps doctrinally different than some mainstream preachers, but we have to be very careful not to call someone we have different views or doctrinal opinions on as being a false teacher or not; a good litmus test for this would be to also look at their lives as a whole, as most false teachers are often money hungry and don’t live up to the very standards of their own lies which they preach to others.

Note: we are never saying that any of these people listed above are not saved, (as only God knows the heart)—but rather we are looking at what they are teaching as not biblical, and they are leading people astray (2 Peter 2:3). Additionally, many of these people who claim to be Doctors (‘Dr.’) are, unfortunately, ‘fake’ doctors. They have been granted/awarded (and possibly purchased) their credentials from those schools and organizations of whom they work/serve or even own and support—wolves running with wolves.

Therefore, let us beware of false prophets and false teachers, both men, and women, who are self-appointed declarers of the doctrines of man and who seek to spread their false gospel and attract followers by sponsoring their books, YouTube channels, and conferences whose contents challenge fundamental doctrines of the true Church. Beware of those who speak and publish in opposition to God’s true prophets and who actively proselyte others with reckless disregard for the eternal well-being of those whom they seduce.

Friends, God can do, whatever He wants to do, whenever He wants to do it, and is not loosing any anthropomorphic ¹ sleep over whether or not He has our permission to do it…

Can you image the arrogance and the hubris ² for a wretched, vile, sinful, fallen, frail, finite creature. …a sinful creature, with the kind of arrogance to say that we are going to give Yahweh permission to do whatever He wants to… to fulfill His passions; unbelievable, it’s truly unbelievable.”
– Justin Peters

    1. Notes: Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities.
    2. Notes: Hubris is the characteristic of excessive confidence or arrogance, which leads a person to believe that he or she may do no wrong. The overwhelming pride caused by hubris is often considered a flaw in character.

In contrast—there are (and have been) hundreds, upon thousands (perhaps even millions) of men and women of God who do preach, teach, and share the true gospel

Godly Pastors and Shepherds of today such as Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr., (Teacher/Guide) Amir Tsarfati, Dr. (Pastor) Andrew Farley, Pastor Charles Lawson, Dr. Chuck (Charles) W. Missler, Dr. David Jeremiah, Rev. David Wilkerson, Pastor (Theologian) Doug J. Wilson, Pastor Jack Hibbs, Dr. (Theologian) James R. White, Pastor/Elder Jeff Durbin, (Author/Speaker) Joel Richardson, Pastor John MacArthur, (Evangelist) Justin Peters, Pastor Mike Winger, Dr. (Theologian/Professor) Owen Strachan, (Missionary/Evangelist) Paul Washer, Dr. Steven J. Lawson, Reverend Timothy J. Keller, Dr. Voddie T. Baucham, and (Apologist) William Lane Craig, Ph.D. …just to name a few—and others from before our day such as The Preacher and Apostle Paul (which goes without saying—along with all of the Biblical authors and true (real) Apostles), Dr. (Evangelist) Billy Graham, Preacher Charles Haden Spurgeon, (Pastor, Author, and Educator) Charles R. Swindoll, (Preacher/Evangelist) George Whitfield, Pastor Jack Hayford, (Preacher, Minister, Theologian, and Writer) John Knox, (Scholar/Theologian) John Calvin, (Clergyman/Evangelist) John Wesley, (Philosopher, Theologian, and Preacher) John Wycliffe, (Preacher/Author) Jonathan Edwards, (Professor of Theology, Augustinian Monk in the Order of Saint Augustine (OSA), Priest, Author, and Composer) Martin Luther, (Minister/Author) Matthew Henry, (Minister/Theologian) Dr. R. C. Sproul …just to name a few. I could go on forever as a blog post article such as this wouldn’t be able to accommodate all of their names of course.

The names of the people listed as Godly (God-fearing) above may hold multiple/various roles/offices/callings such as Pastors/Shepherds/Teachers, and Elders; Theologians/(Seminary) Professors (of Theology and/or Biblical Studies)/Presidencies (of which many (or some) have Masters of Divinity and/or Masters of Theology); Missionaries/Evangelists/Preachers; and of which all are brothers in the Risen Lord Jesus Christ. Question: does anyone reading these names, notice any differences or trends between that list here as the Godly people, versus the counterfeiters of false ‘apostles/prophets/teachers’ listed as deceivers and tricksters further above?

5) How are we to handle false teachers biblically?
Biblically, concerning false teachers, we are commanded to stay away from them. Obviously, blatant false teachers such as Joel Osteen and Steven Furtick (as mentioned in the list above) need to be avoided completely. However, there are brothers who we can disagree with on a great many things without them being called false teachers, such as Andy Stanley, or Tim Mackie for instance—who teach wonderful truths from the Scriptures. So how then should we handle those who we believe to be false teachers? Here is what the Bible instructs us as follows:

2 Corinthians 11:13-15
 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”

  • These false teachers are agents of Satan himself. Do not listen to them, because they destroy the gospel of Christ.

1 Timothy 6:3-4
 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions,”

  • These false teachers understand nothing regarding the truth—avoid them.

2 John 10-11
 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.”

  • Since we are instructed not to greet false teachers—it, therefore, goes also that we should not listen to their teaching.

6) What about dreams and visions, or trips to heaven?

Christians still have dreams and visions from the LORD today (God uses Scripture to speak to our spirits according to His will)—but not at the expense of replacing Biblical Revelation from the written Word of God as God’s final authority! The false ‘churches’ or NAR movement has deceived Christians into believing that they can take a heavenly trip anytime they (or ‘Holy Spirit’—not the real Holy Spirit, but rather a lying demon) wishes them to. 1. Hi William, thanks for that catch! I have left him on the list of false teachers as there have been so many men of faith that have had some very strong concerns regarding Evan’s teachings… with Pastor John MacArther being one of those men. Not all of Evan’s teachings have been wrong or worrisome to say the least—however, I will include someone else’s video about this matter to check out for further clarification regarding Tony Evans here: https://youtu.be/V136KI-lPes

  1. Did you realize you have Dr. Tony Evans on both lists. You call him a false prophet on one and then a godly man on the other list. Which is it? You know Dr. Evans is not a cessationist, right?

    1. Hi Endi, thanks for that catch! (That was meant to be corrected earlier, of which it has been done now).
